All Playschool Methodologies Explained and Compared

All Play School Teaching Methodologies Compared

Nuclear families with working parents usually find it hard to take care of their little kids. This very demand
is the base behind different types of play-schools sprouting across. Be it the Montessori or the current Multiple
Intelligence based schooling, parents have a wide variety of play-school genres to choose from.
Young kids tend to grasp things quicker because the brain undergoes tremendous development from the time
of birth to six. The environment the kid is prone to at early ages can have long lasting effects which makes it
crystal clear why early education plays a crucial role in your child’s life.
Going back in time, play-school was just a common area; hosting kids of same age group and engaging them
with various activities for a stipulated time period. This notion has changed in the recent times with more and
more innovative teaching methodologies and curriculum designed for the young minds.
Now you can see playschools with a blend of traditional and modern ways of teaching, many engaging programs
and fun based activities for kids. So let us explore some of these methods here.

Montessori Method:

Dr. Maria Montessori designed this method where a child is the master of what he wants to learn through
self-conducted activities, hands-on learning and joint play. This form of education forms the base for a creative
learning in the child. Children learn best in a simulated and safe environment supporting their curiosity to acquire
knowledge. This was the principle aimed by the Italian Dr. Maria.
In this process of learning the teacher’s role is to prepare the environment that enables the child’s self-learning.
Once the proper atmosphere is created they just need to sit back and observe the child as she independently
explores things.
For example, to imbibe practical life activities (such as personal care) is demonstrated through actions like
washing hands, wearing shoes and be able to polish them and so on.
When you visit a Montessori play school, you will be welcomed to happy and peaceful classrooms that aim to
satisfy the developmental needs of a child in every phase of life. Make sure that the teachers are trained in this
form of learning from a Montessori Society.

Playway Method:

This technique helps in developing the independent and expressive quotient of a child in a more playful way.
Encouraging the child to be involved in more number of activities helps them to learn the concepts underneath,
thus boosting their creative skills and self-expression.
Fredrich Froebel is considered to be the mind behind this play way method. Children learn best in a playful way
supported by the teacher. A child sees the world and tries to understand its nature by playfully mimicking the
grownup acts, this observation helped the German tutor to promote playful way in the playschool curriculum.
It’s not a child’s play to learn through this method, so parents have to ensure that the instructors are trained
properly. The Nursery Teacher’s training is one such program in India where teachers are trained this Playway
method of learning.

Multiple Intelligence:

Intelligence is not the standard skill of a child instead it is identified into seven different types by an American
psychologist, Howard Gardner. Every child is unique and so do they have different learning abilities, this is
where the multiple intelligence methodology of learning pitches in.
A child may be sound smart, or number smart; life smart or people smart; body smart or word smart. Be it any
type of ability this learning process helps a child identify in which area he is smart and what other abilities he
need to hone for his all-round development.
This is a pleasant shift from the traditional methodology of learning. More number of play schools are opting
for this type of approach towards the child developmental abilities.
Other popular learning methods:
In addition to the above noted learning methods, there are other well tried techniques of Waldorf Steiner and
John Dewey or philosophies of Aurobindo and Jiddu Krishnamurthy.
Education is an evolving process and change here is constant. Child psychology and early education are the
fields where lot of research and new developments occur frequently, the learning techniques also are up for
innovation and improvement.
As we have discussed various available learning methods in the early years of a child, parents now are
equipped with the ability to choose the playschool that meets their child’s requirement.
Happy Schooling.
